The bigger change in marketing is not a new job title. It is new tasks. Indeed Hiring Lab found that the share of U.S. marketing job postings mentioning AI rose from 8.4% at the start of 2025 to 14.9% in December 2025, while overall postings were flat or declining. We think the marketers who can build the automations, pages and reports themselves are best placed to gain ground.

Why it matters
The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects jobs for advertising and promotions managers to fall 4% from 2025 to 2035. It points to AI being used "to more quickly generate, test, and modify digital advertisements." Marketing managers are projected to grow 7%. We read that as work moving around inside marketing, not leaving it.
Learn the task first
A study by Ryan Doser looked at 1,229 U.S. marketing job posts from 605 companies. Of those, 38.7% asked for AI skills, counting nice-to-haves.
In his words, "84.2% of the 476 US marketing job posts that asked for AI skills never named a specific AI tool."
We read that as employers wanting the outcome, not a brand name. Tools change every few months. The task stays. Learn to set up a welcome email that sends itself to every new sign-up, build a campaign page on your own, or pull a report on which campaigns brought in customers. Then you can pick up whatever tool the next employer uses.
What the work is
On Greg Isenberg's show on October 28, 2026, Greg said, "I think we're now entering the age of the marketing engineer." He described a marketer who uses AI agents to run dozens of experiments a day. His guest, Gamma co-founder Jon Noronha, agreed and added, "I have loved seeing how everybody's skill sets are just blending."
Anthropic sponsored the episode, and Greg's design agency has worked with Gamma.
One company spells the tasks out. Profound listed five openings with Marketing Engineer in the title on its careers page as of October 30, 2026. The listed tasks start with "Build marketing agents and automations." They include agents that handle lead follow-up and campaign reporting, systems that track which campaigns drove results, dashboards, schema markup, and automating the publishing pipeline. Another of the five, the demand generation opening, covers follow-up messages over time, programs for existing customers, and marketing aimed at specific named companies.
Profound sells AI marketing software, so it has a stake in the term catching on.

Skills to pick up
Search by task, not title. We see the same work under other titles too, such as marketing operations, marketing automation, growth engineering and marketing technology. These are the skills that show up:
Marketing automation: email sequences, lead follow-up, and triggers that fire when someone signs up.
Landing pages: building and changing a page yourself, without waiting on a developer.
Data pulls and reporting: getting numbers out of your tools and into a weekly report or dashboard.
Tracking and attribution: tagging links and events so you know which campaign brought in the customer.
Schema markup: the code on a page that tells search engines and AI answer tools what the page is about.
Simple agent workflows: small AI helpers that draft, sort or route work on a schedule.
Pick one. Build something real with it at your current job. Then pick the next one. A working automation you can show beats a certificate.
For small businesses
Most small businesses do not have a marketing team. They have one person, or the owner. A marketer who can build with AI can take on work that used to wait for a developer or an agency:
A landing page for a new offer, built and changed in house.
Follow-up emails that go out on their own when a lead comes in.
A weekly report that pulls the numbers together without copy and paste.
Tracking that shows which ad or post actually brought in the sale.
Schema markup so search engines and AI tools describe the business correctly.
When you hire, ask candidates to show you something they built.
How rare the title is
The counts are small, for this title and a related one, go-to-market engineer.
Live Data Technologies (vendor research) counts 75 people with the marketing engineer title at tech firms in July 2026, up from 49 a year earlier. The previous high was 58, in 2022.
Trayo (vendor research) counts 2,957 people with the go-to-market engineer title as of September 12, 2026.
GTMhub (vendor research) found only 30 of 1,580 sales and marketing postings it reviewed used the go-to-market engineer title.
The marketing engineer title also does not appear in LinkedIn's Jobs on the Rise 2026 list of the 25 fastest growing U.S. jobs.
